In 1948, popular high school student Buster Lane grows frustrated with his fiancée Margie Hooks when she refuses to have sex with him. Many of his friends blow off steam with Billie Jo Truluck, a poor girl with a bad reputation. Buster begins visiting Billie but soon realizes that he cares more for her than for his fiancée. Buster and Billie become a public couple, scandalizing the small town and infuriating Buster
