Descrição
The contractor has begun to pour the concrete all at the north end of the bridge. Due to the length of the walls on this bridge, the walls are poured in short segments of approximately 20 feet in length. This allows the contractor to pour one portion of wall while he’s still working on forming up the rest of the wall. It also ensures that the concrete in each segment is one continuous mass. If the wall was poured in one long segment the concrete at the bottom of the wall would begin to harden before the upper portion of the wall is poured, which would reduce the integrity of the wall. Bulkheads in the formwork are used to allow this segmented construction. A bulkhead is basically a piece of formwork perpendicular to the main wall formwork and allows the horizontal reinforcement in the wall pass through and tie into the next segment of the wall. Here a steel pile is used to brace the bulkhead from bowing out while the concrete is poured. The top of the pile is supported to the main formwork using a chain ratchet.
